Reasons to Visit North Devon ? Where to begin…….

North Devon has plenty to offer from amazing landscapes, a dramatic coast and many beaches and towns with plenty of attractions for every age & interest.

Whether cycling, hiking, gentle strolling, surfing, shopping, arts or eating are your thing, North Devon has it covered.

There are far too many to list each one but here are some ideas to help.....

Beach Days

Woolacombe and Saunton Sands are just two sandy beaches worth a visit.  Not too far away is of course Bude (technically Cornwall) but can be classed in this category.   For more seclusion try visiting the Tunnels beaches in Illfracombe.   A little favourite of mine is Instow beach and the Northern Burrows with its beautiful sand dunes.

Boat Trips

Take a day visit to the magnificent Lundy Island, either by ferry from Illfracombe (make sure you visit the Illfracombe Tunnels whilst you are there!).   Whilst on board you can spot seals and puffins before exploring the wonderful island itself, there is a pub, post office, gift shop and two lighthouses!

Water Sports

Try out some water sports in Putsborough Beach near Braunton, wonderful beach where you can try out surfing or paddle boarding from a local school.

Lynton, Lynmouth & Valley of the Rocks

See amazing views from the valley of the rocks on the way to Lynton and Lynmouth where you can take a ride on the Lynton to Lynmouth Cliff Railway which dates back to 1890 and is powered by water.   Relax in one of Lynmouth’s cafes or pubs and watch the world go by whilst taking in the stunning views.

Coast Path & Tarka Trail

Walk the South West Coastal path, dramatic coastal views – not for the faint hearted due to some of the steep inclines but thoroughly worth it! Alternatively, walk or cycle the Tarka Trail for equally stunning views and exercise!

Clovelly

Talking of walking… part of the coast path goes through the picturesque village of Clovelly.  Beautiful winding cobbled streets with historical fishing cottages leading to the harbour and an well earned tipple at the end.  If you cannot face the walk back up there is a land rover for £2.50 to assist!

Train Rides

For a more sedate way to see the scenery, try out a journey between Lynton and Barnstaple – a much more relaxing way to see the North Devon country side.

The Big Sheep

For children (all ages) there is the Big Sheep theme park which has rides and animals to keep you entertained.  There are numerous activities throughout the year, especially in the holidays.  There is also an inside soft play area for smaller ones.

Appledore

And of course we had to mention the amazing Appledore with its abundance of multicoloured cottages, pubs, cafes, John’s Deli and wonderful views along the quay of the estuary whilst indulging in a Hockings Ice Cream!  Make sure you visit the North Devon Museum here too and take a ferry across to Instow.
